Week 4 was dedicated to defining the exact boundaries of my Literature Review and choosing the case studies that would guide my reading. A major trap in writing a literature review is losing control of the scope. To avoid this, I decided that my review must evaluate how authors explain the transition from traditional, live-action cinematic rules to absolute digital freedom.
To contextualise this theoretical transition, I chose to ground my reading in two highly contrasting animation milestones: Pixar’s The Incredibles (2004) and Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). This was a deliberate critical strategy. By focusing on texts that analyze these two specific films, I can evaluate a fourteen-year technological shift. The Incredibles represents early-era digital limits where animators voluntarily simulated physical camera behaviors, while Into the Spider-Verse represents contemporary expressionism that rejects physical limits. This clear boundary will prevent me from getting lost in infinite reading.
