A Single Life is chosen because it demonstrates how a complete narrative can be conveyed through purely visual and auditory elements, relying on a single character’s actions rather than dialogue to explore time, choice, and consequence.
As Week 1 of the semester commenced, my primary objective was to define a precise, critically rigorous topic for my upcoming Literature Review. Because my personal passion for 3D animation is vast, my initial ideas were far too broad. I found myself wanting to read literature about everything from the history of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to the commercial marketing of contemporary animation studios.
However, looking at my unorganized notes, I felt highly overwhelmed. I quickly realised that a common mistake in postgraduate writing is choosing a topic that is too descriptive. If I simply review the general history of 3D animation, my essay will read like a textbook summary rather than a critical interrogation of texts. I spent the remaining days of this week browsing through general industry reports, looking for a specific visual phenomenon in animation cinema that genuinely requires deep theoretical investigation. I need a sharp analytical focal point rather than a superficial overview of a giant industry.
