WEEK 1

Cinematography II

Key Elements of Cinematic Language

Before this class, I thought cinematography was only about making images look cinematic. Now I understand it is about controlling emotion. The camera guides how the audience feels.

Learning about deep focus, shallow focus and rack focus helped me see how attention is controlled. Depth of field is not only technical, it also changes emotion. Focal length also affects feeling. A wide lens can make a character look small. A long lens can feel close or stressful. I realised emotion does not only come from acting. The lens can also show psychology.

Geometry in the frame is important too. Symmetry, empty space and lines can change power and tension. In animation, everything is created by us, so every composition is a choice.

Camera movement is also part of performance. A dolly zoom creates tension. Handheld feels real. An arc shot adds drama.

As an animation student, I now think more about camera decisions, not only body movement. In 3D animation, we control everything, so we must use the camera carefully.
