WEEK 18

This week, I completed the polish stage of my crouching pull animation. Compared to the blocking stage, my focus shifted towards refining the quality of movement and making the action feel more believable.

One challenge I encountered was maintaining stability in the crouching pose. During polish, small adjustments to the hips, knees, or feet could easily affect the character’s balance, causing the pose to feel unstable. I spent time refining the relationship between the pelvis and feet to ensure that the character appeared firmly grounded throughout the action.

Another issue involved body compression and extension. When pulling from a crouched position, the body naturally compresses before generating force and then extends as the pull is completed. In my initial polish pass, these changes were too subtle, making the action feel weak. By refining the arcs of the hips, spine, and shoulders, I was able to create a clearer sense of energy flowing through the body.

I also paid more attention to small details such as finger adjustments, head reactions, and subtle shifts in posture. These secondary movements helped communicate the character’s effort without relying on exaggerated motion.

Through this process, I learned that polish is not only about smoothing animation curves. It is about strengthening the physical logic of the action and enhancing the audience’s understanding of how the character is using their body. This exercise helped me appreciate the importance of subtle details in creating a convincing performance.
